The Journey

My name is David Eckstein-Schoemann and I am a young adult with high functioning autism. This fact has always been a staple in my life. From as early as I can remember, I have encountered numerous situations that made me question my ability to move forward in life and have a future.

As I’ve considered these experiences and spoken with others who have autism, I’ve had an important realization. There are numerous people like me who have had similar experiences, many of whom have tougher circumstances or do not have the support that I had growing up.

Despite the high number of people who have autism (recent statistics show that 1 in 44 born in America today have Autism Spectrum Disorder), many of them are not as open about their experiences. I understand their choices, as I too have remained mostly silent about this aspect of my life.

In the last few years, however, I’ve learned the importance of communication in helping people understand one another. This is why I have decided to come forward and write about my experiences in this blog/vlog. It is also why I will use this site as a platform to share the experiences of others with autism and of their family members.
